Ads & Dynamic Insertion

Ichos supports Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI), allowing you to inject audio advertisements into episodes at playback time without permanently altering the original episode audio.

Core Concepts

  1. Ad: A reusable audio asset (e.g., a 30-second spot for a sponsor).
  2. Insertion Point: A marker on an specific Episode (e.g., at 00:15:00) indicating where an ad can be placed.
  3. Stitching: When a listener requests an episode, the system checks for Insertion Points and stitches the Ad audio into the stream in real-time.

Creating an Ad

Ads are managed similarly to Episodes. You create the metadata entity first, then link the audio.

1. Create Ad Entity

POST /v1/ads { "label": "Sponsor - Mattress Company (Spring 2024)", "active": true }

Upload the audio file using the standard Audio workflow (see Audio docs), then link it to the Ad.

PUT /v1/ads/{adId}/link-audio { "audioId": "audio_..." }

Defining Insertion Points

To tell the system where to place ads, you must define insertion points on an episode.

POST /v1/ads/insertion-points { "episodeId": "ep_123", "points": [ { "offsetSeconds": 0, "type": "pre-roll" }, // Start of episode { "offsetSeconds": 900, "type": "mid-roll" }, // 15 minutes in { "offsetSeconds": -1, "type": "post-roll" } // End of episode ] }

Ad Selection Logic

Currently, ads are selected based on a weighting system configured at the Organization or Virtual User level. If multiple active ads exist, the system uses these weights to determine probability.
